Taken on 14 April 2007 at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California.

This is what's left after the flower of a vining pitcher plant drops off.

When I saw this, all I could think of were the whiplash curves drawn by Alphonse Mucha in his Art Noveau work.

Crocosmia
Originally uploaded by doug_r
Also known as Montbretia, this South African plant is a very hardy and mildly invasive species here in the Pacific Northwest. It has been hybridized into a number of sizes and colors, though all are shades that I've seen are of yellow, orange and red. I'm not sure what hybrid this specimen is from but the outsides of the flower petals are orange and the insides yellow.

Though not uncommon in Puget Sound, when I lived in Oklahoma there were infrequent visitors and were locally known as "water turkeys". They were the scourge of bass fisherman since they were supposed to be able to clean out a small lake in just a few days.

This image was made on an early June day with afternoon thunderclouds bumping around, occasionally spitting big drops of rain and small, scarcely frozen hailstones. The light was fantastic on this day, moving around and spotlighting different parts of the mountains, valleys, moraines, cirques, and arêtes.

Robert Pirsig, in his book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, describes a time when he was trying to get a student past a bad case of writer's block by describing each brick in a wall of bricks. The student finally observed that each brick is different, and so reached an epiphany of sorts. Everywhere, everything is different - each snowflake, each petal, each blade of grass, each cloud, each pebble, each moment, each second.

This image was taken toward the end of October, 2005 in the Alpine Garden Greenhouse at the St. Gallen Botanical Garden in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

This bloom is past it's prime and surrounded by the shards of older blossoms. I found it strikingly beautiful even in decay.

This image is a rework of a color image.

The weeknights spent in hotel rooms while traveling are a good time to learn and practice Photoshop.

With luck, the tulip will open a bit more in a couple of days affording another view.

Rhododendron Bud

Rhododendron Bud
Originally uploaded by doug_r.
February is a cruel month - still coolish, and still not out of the woods for a cold snap. But on the other hand many of the buds are swelling up: Rhodies, Nipponese Maples and Azaleas. Some things are in bloom: Witch Hazel, Helebores, Primroses, Cyclamen and Sarcacoca. Still others are just peeking up: Columbine, Daffodils, Tulips, and Crocosmia. So many signs of things to come - and Mother Nature's optimism to see us through til they flower.
